How my journey into burnout coaching began

Welcome! I’m Sarah Feeley — and if you’re here, I’m guessing you’re feeling stressed out, overworked, and overwhelmed. I’ve been there, and come out the other side!

Dreading the day

I used to dread waking up each day, stressed about rushing out of my house to a job I no longer enjoyed but spent way too much time at. I was drinking too much coffee and constantly visiting the office candy bowl for energy to get through my day. I ate lunch at my desk as fast as I could while checking emails, and I regularly worked late even when I swore to myself that today would be the day I would leave on time to get to spin class. Instead, I got home late, exhausted, and vegged out to the TV with a bottle of wine (you read that right, a bottle!). 

My health was abysmal - I was 100 pounds overweight, I had high blood pressure, my panic attacks were back, I hardly slept through the night, and I had chronic back pain and heartburn. I felt like my marriage was on the verge of divorce from constant arguing. I was in credit card debt and didn’t know how I could possibly work any harder to make more money to pay it off. I was overwhelmed, thinking, “this isn’t how it’s supposed to be!”

I felt a constant internal pressure to do it all - I thought I HAD to work all hours to be a good employee, to be successful, to be liked. I was raised with the belief that you had to follow the rules and work hard.

I wanted to be able to “turn off” from working. 

I wanted to spend quality time with my husband or friends, but when I was with them, I was distracted or resentful, always thinking about what was waiting for me on my to-do list.

I wanted to take better care of myself and have more “me time”. 

I knew I needed much more than a vacation. I felt trapped and I wanted to blow it all up. I dreamed about walking away from everything just so I could get off the “hamster wheel”.

The big interruption

I finally carved out some “me time” to attend a SOLignment breathwork Introductory Workshop one Sunday afternoon. The facilitator, who was also a life coach, was holding a weekend retreat just a few weeks later. Even though it was expensive and I didn’t know how I would clear my schedule to be able to attend, I knew I desperately needed this break. 

I had never taken time away just for me, to pause and reflect. I even had to learn how to live without my cell phone for three days! “But what if there’s a work emergency?!” -- that was seriously my thought. And what I found by taking this pause to look within was that I wasn’t actually stuck. I had the power to do something different with my life. 

The retreat not only provided great interruption from my day to day but provided a safe group container to reevaluate my life choices - I realized there was so much more to life than work and exhaustion, and gained perspective that I had the power to take my life in a different direction. After the retreat, I continued to work with coaches, change my mindset, heal past hurts, and take steps to create a life I loved.

A brand new me

Through this work, I broke old thought patterns and habits that were driving my workaholism, perfectionism, and people pleasing; you may know those oldies-but-not-so-goodies well yourself: “I’m not worthy, not good enough” “You must work hard to earn good money and be successful”, “hard work = love,” “I can’t let my boss down.” It started with Straight A’s, moved to a “good college”, then to promotions and climbing the ladder; I was always on the fast track to achievement -- and I couldn’t stop because it would mean losing that approval and love I so deeply desired. 

Once I could see how this happened to me, and the life I could have without these false beliefs, I made small steps towards creating it. This included daily, healthy habits to prioritize my self care, such as meditation, affirmations, journaling, breathing, pausing. Before you roll your eyes and tell yourself “I don’t have time for that!” I've been there and done that, and you actually DO have time when you start to reexamine your beliefs and behaviors! Once I started slowly taking care of myself, I naturally wanted to eat better, move my body, cultivate better sleep habits, etc. And the things I didn’t like fell away - like drinking that bottle of wine every night! - AND I was able to set boundaries with work, work less and stress out less, and still get my to do list done with ease.

I used to wake up dreading the day ahead. Now I wake up looking forward to the day instead -- and without an alarm, because I hate ‘em!
